There have been over fifteen million cans of pepper spray sold in the United States alone for self defense. Most of those cans will never be sprayed. In many cases where the spray is needed, it is unfortunate that they are rendered ineffective by a lack of pepper spray training.
For any self defense weapon to be useful, you must be trained in using that weapon. The time to learn how to remove the safety cap and spray your pepper spray is not when you are being attacked. If the nozzle is pointed in the wrong direction, you will spray yourself. Pepper spray training will prepare you in case the worst ever happens.
Some pepper spray manufacturers offer a training spray container filled with water. If your manufacturer does not offer the training can, then buy two identical cans of pepper spray so that you can use one for a training can and one to carry for self defense. Once a can has been used for training, do not depend on it for self defence, it may run out of spray.
One suggested method of training is to go outside and tape a piece of paper at about head height to a tree. Use the water can or the extra can of pepper spray to practice opening the container and spraying the paper attacker. Initially you are not trying for speed, but for accuracy.
The container needs to be held firmly between your palm and fingers. Use the thumb to flip open the cap. Then use the thumb or trigger finger to operate the button that sprays the contents at the paper target. Continue practicing until you can accurately shoot the spray at the target.
Once you make a spray, always take a step to the side and back. You do not want to get the pepper in your own eyes. This will also move you out of the way of your attacker. - 29958
