Update Your Style In The Bathroom

By Brian Gil

Of all the rooms in a house, the bathroom is one that most often gets ignored when it comes to imaginative decor. Yet studies have shown that improvements in kitchens and bathrooms add the most to a home's resale value.

Here are three design themes that can give a much-needed revival to a ho-hum bathroom.

Clean Contemporary: this look is not just for living rooms or dining rooms. It is now possible to get this look in the bathroom as well. It offers a wood finish and metallic accents so you can see how it could work well in the bath. The main look is uncluttered and you can accomplish this on the countertops, in the cabinets, and on the floors. Add natural stone, ceramic tile, or wood on the floor then finish the look of a contemporary bathroom by making it relaxing and natural. You want it to feel as though you have went to the spa. Here are some tips:

* Select a natural wood finish for your cabinets * Match wood with stone or granite and marble for your countertops * Use earth tones for tiles and add the finished touches. You may want to add a low-pile contemporary rug so it doesn't slip on the tiles. * You may want to add raised-granite lavatory bowl as your sink. * Store everything off the counter. Contemporary means simple and of course clean.

Timeless Tradition. A bathroom done in Traditional style creates a retreat fit for European royalty. Traditional style traces its roots to 18th Century opulence, highlighted by floral fabrics, gilded finishes, elaborate shapes in faucets and fixtures and rich-looking accents in porcelain, silver and gold. The emphasis is on tasteful luxury without clutter, a sumptuous expression of timeless elegance.

Guidelines for a Traditional style bathroom * Choose toile or floral fabrics for vanity skirts, draperies and wallpaper. Be sure to include an area rug in a style that harmonizes with the fabric patterns and colors. * Select bathroom hardware -- faucets, doorknobs, drawer pulls, towel rings, and mirror frames - in brass finishes. * Decorate with old-world reproductions or botanical prints and collectibles such as gilt hand mirrors, vintage perfume or apothecary bottles and wooden or porcelain boxes. * Give porcelain and china pieces new uses, such as holding guest soaps or hand towels.

* You can use a floral design for vanity skirts, wallpaper, or draperies. Use an area rug that brings balance to the room. * Choose the bathroom hardware carefully; doorknobs, drawer pulls, towel rings, mirrors in brass finishes, and more * Decorate using the older style botanical prints and the collectibles look like hand mirrors, vintage perfume, or apothecary bottles and more * Use your old porcelain pieces to hold guest soaps or hand towels. Just remember, if you use a little imagination you can create a bathroom with the best design. with the best design. - 29958
