How To Remodel Your Bathrooms Yourself

By Peter Unsworth

First you must start with a demolition process before you remodel bathrooms. You start by first removing the old tile from the walls. You then have to remove the vinyl from the floor. Place an electric fan blowing out the window so the dust from the demolition will blow out. If you want to replace the tub you will have to break it apart using a sledge and remove it out in sections.

A plumber needs to block off the water pipes to the bathroom so you can have water in the rest of the home while you work on the bathroom. Now you need to start on the floor. Screw plywood into the floor to create a solid base for the new tile. If you want safety bars to the shower stall you have to place more framing between the studs in the wall so you can fasten the bars.

You will want to lay a concrete base where you will put the shower stall so that the shower base will be very strong. Level the concrete base so that you have a level foundation for the shower stall.

The shower base, made out of fiberglass, has to be leveled perfectly and then attached into the wall supports. With the shower base installed protect it with cardboard covered by a plywood layer while you work above it during the renovation completion.

Use construction glue to attach the framing board above the shower base where you will next attach the cement board. Cut the cement board fitted over the base of the shower. You will next nail the cement board to the framing that you have applied the construction glue to. Cement board for your information is one half inch cement and a fiberglass combination. Once the cement board has been attached apply tape over the seams. Then apply water proof sealant over the board in order to make it water proof.

Now comes the electrical work. You have to make holes in the wall in order to pass wires for the exhaust fan on top of the shower. You have to measure and place cement board on the floor which will serve as the base for the floor tile. Spray the ceilings and walls in order to give a textured look when you paint. The holes and cut outs will not show.

Install the tile around the shower wall using thin set adhesive. For a nice design use a diagonal cut tile of a different color in the middle of the wall. Floor tile is installed after the wall tile and is allowed to dry overnight. You can install wax coating on the lower walls. The vanity and the toilet are installed after the floor tile dries over night. Next the wall tile needs to be grouted.

Then put in the shower door. Many people forget the importance of using a level when putting on the door. You want to make sure you have your handy level with you and use it and check your work at all times when hanging a door. Drill holes carefully when you are working with the tile and attach the door. This whole job takes about five days. Have fun doing this and you will look forward to your new bathroom. - 29958
