Can The Internet Make You A Better Parent?

By Kathy Forcey

When I heard the saying that kids don't come with a handbook I never really understood what they meant. Then I had a baby of my own and I suddenly knew exactly what they meant. No two children are exactly the same, what works with one child won't work with another.

Where did you learn how to be a parent? You have to take lessons to drive a car but just about anyone can have a baby. Most of us don't remember to much about how our parents dealt with every situation, we do tend to remember the extreme situations. Yet so much of our interaction with our children is based on how our parents were with us.

When you have children you need to make conscious decisions about how you treat them, it is far to easy to just react to whatever they do. By thinking about how you want to deal with specific things before they happen you will be prepared.

It can be difficult knowing who to listen to where parenting is concerned, all of us see other parents doing things that we wouldn't do. What about watching one of the many TV programs where a nanny goes and helps some family that is on the edge? These shows can be good for your ego as they always make me feel that maybe I am not doing such a bad job after all.

While some of the TV programs can be fun, they don't go into enough depth to be of much use to most of us. Other than as a way of realizing that our kids aren't so bad and maybe we aren't doing such a bad job after all.

I have been lucky in that I quickly found a place where I could read the content and relate to it. I also like that I can ask questions when I am really stuck. - 29958
