How to make Batido de Mango while living in Monteverde Costa Rica

By Hailee L. Rustad

Traveling offers opportunities to learn and try new foods. I have been traveling Costa Rica and have recently become accustomed to rice and beans. More importantly, the fruits and vegetables of Monteverde, Costa Rica.

To name some of the produce that fascinates me: Chioti, Yucca, Lychee fruit and Mango's. A drink, shake, blend that you need to try is Batido de Mango. Warning?it is addicting.

Making it is extremely easy, wondering why it took me 25 years to discover. First things first, you need a ripe mango. Ripe mango's have more sugar, and I have a sweet tooth!

When you are at the store buying a mango or two, know that mango's with more colors similar to red mean that it is ripe. Grab a few so you can practice and eat! Depending on where you live, they are probably seasonal, so treat yourself when they are around.

To start, peel and cut the mango anyway you like. Toss the mango in the blender. Use the scraps from your mango as compost for your own personal fruit or vegetables.

To complete the batido, you need milk, sugar and ice. It is simple and easy. Add one tray of ice cubes or two handfuls and three cups of milk.

I have a sweet tooth, so I add one fourth of a cup of sugar. Use your own discretion for the taste you desire. Blend ingredients for a minute or two.

Mango's have a fine fiber texture so the more you blend, the better. If you like it thicker you can add more mango or a banana. Ice does the trick as well. Pour your new healthy drink into a glass and enjoy.

I enjoy my batido de mango in the morning, on the patio of Hidden Canopy Tree House Boutique Hotel in Monteverde, Costa Rica. Hopefully you can find a place as breathtaking to enjoy yours. Mango shakes are always better with tree houses, cloud forests and monkeys! - 29958
