Sprouting Seeds in Paper Towels Project

By Rebeccah Flandry

Your toddler can learn how things grow by sprouting seeds in a paper towel. It is very easy to do, and only takes a few minutes to get started. You can actually find most of the stuff lying around your house. In fact, if you and your assistant begin collecting items you'll need right now, you'll see sprouts growing in less than three days!

Find a dish, a large plastic sandwich bag, and some growing seeds. Call your child in, so he can help prepare the project. Make sure the plate will fit inside the sandwich bag. Purchase a larger bag if it doesn't fit. If the bag is as large as they come, then get a smaller dish.

Next, soak the paper towel in water for a few seconds, and gently squeeze out the excess. Children love playing in water, so this would be a great time to grab your camera. Let your assistant flatten out the paper towel, and cover the empty plate with it.

Avoid piling the seeds in one spot onto the wet paper towels. Keep the growing seeds in a single layer and try not to let them touch. Some of the sides will inevitably touch.

Add the other wet paper towels on top of the sprinkled seeds, and slide everything into the plastic bag. Make sure you keep the sprouts in a dry place, and check on them daily. To prevent mold, you can grow them in a dark place, but it will take longer.

Enjoy the moment as your child learns about how things grow. Getting to see sprouting seeds growing under the dirt can be fascinating and educational for any young child. With an easy plan, and basic tools, your toddler will begin to understand the important of science at an early age. - 29958
